Day Trips from Munich, Germany

If you happen to find yourself scheduled to be in Munich on a Sunday, it might be a good idea to plan on taking a day trip out of the city. Since we were unaware that the city rolls up its sidewalks and takes a lazy day every Sunday (like most cities in Germany as we later found out), we weren't able to take advantage of some of the wonderful cities that are located nearby. Luckily for you, we're giving you a heads up so that you can take advantage of this time to discover some of the cities that we have named as our top day trips departing from Munich, Germany.

Within Germany
1. Neuschwanstein Castle (1hr45min)-
Undoubtedly the most popular of day trips for those traveling to/through Munich, Neuschwanstein Castle looks like something out of a fairytale, so beautiful that it couldn't possibly be real. With numerous tour companies offering full day tours to the castle and nearby town, it is easy to get to/from this awe-inspiring locale.

2. Nuremberg (1hr45min by car/1hr10min by train)-
Bavaria's second largest city, Nuremberg has gained notoriety from the allied bombings that almost leveled the city and the famous Nuremberg Trials. A great place to spend the day, Nuremberg has dozens of museums that will walk you through it's long and tumultuous history.

3. Eagle's Nest (2hr)-
Built in honor of Hitler's 50th birthday, the Eagle's Nest offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and is great for a change in scenery.

4. Bamberg (2hr15min)-
Sometimes referred to as the Venice of Germany, Bamberg is located along multiple rivers. With architectural gems dating back to the 10th century, Bamberg is an often overlooked destination that should not be missed.

Outside of Germany
1. Salzburg, Austria (1hr30min)-
With it's historic center being one of the best-preserved city centers north of the alps, Salzburg is becoming a must-see on the European traveler's bucketlist. Beautiful any time of year, Salzburg is the perfect place to spend a day wandering around.

3. Innsbruck, Austria (1hr45min)-
With many fun, unique attractions such as the funicular and railways, Innsbruck is a great place to spend a day away from Munich and Germany. Surrounded with natural beauty, Innsbruck is perfect for a day spent shopping in the city and trying out local cuisine or exploring the nearby mountains.
